Working at McDonald's Blog

In the article "Working at McDonald's" (1986) by Amitai Etzioni, published in the Miami Herald, he covers the subject of teen jobs in fast food restaurants. Etzoni argues that teen jobs in places like McDonalds's are not beneficial to teens and ultimately hinders their growth into adulthood and also takes away from their schoolwork. Etzioni writes and publishes this article in the Miami Herald in order to reach a large audience to educate them, especially parents, on the fact that some teen jobs may be hindering teens rather than helping them. Etozoni's audience is a general audience, people who read the paper but most importantly parents who will benefit from reading the article.

I disagree with this article. Although having a job can have and affect a teens efficiency at school, some kids have no choice other than to have a job because they’re having to support themselves. I do however agree with the statement that “youngsters must learn to balance the quest for income with the needs to keep growing and pursue other endeavors that do not pay off instantly” (Last paragraph). Keeping a healthy balance of school and a job can will make for great experience and can lead to the great success.

In the article, "Working at McDonalds", Etzioni pushes the point that being employed at McDonalds does not benefit students at all. In fact he goes as far as to say it affects the students in a negative manner. According to the text, "But in fact, these jobs undermine school attendance and involvement, impart few skills that will be useful in later life, and simultaneously skew the values of teen-agers—especially their ideas about the worth of a dollar." (Etzioni paragraph 2) This explains Etzioni's point in the fact that working at McDonalds negatively affects the students and does not benefit them in any way. He also calls the job uneducational and further protests against it. For example, "Closer examination, however, finds the McDonald’s kind of job highly uneducational in several ways. This explains his argument against working at McDonalds.
