Teenage Abstract Thinking

Image
Teenage abstract thinking                                 In this informative article “Beautiful Teenage Brain” (2005) by David Dodds, Dodds entails on the differences between adult and teenage thinking . Dodds uses science and examples from different teenager’s experiences to support his claim that although teens and adults have the same brain overall, teenagers don’t evaluate risks as much as adults do. The purpose of this article was to convince the audience in order to explain the differences between teenagers and adults. The audience are people that are interested in science, and adults reading the National Geographic. I agree with the concept that teenagers evaluate risk and reward differently. The reason being is because teens believe that if the reward is higher than the risk, then doing the risk no matter wha...

Working at McDonald's Blog

Image
In the article "Working at McDonald's" (1986) by Amitai Etzioni, published in the  Miami Herald , he covers the subject of teen jobs in fast food restaurants. Etzoni argues that teen jobs in places like McDonalds's are not beneficial to teens and ultimately hinders their growth into adulthood and also takes away from their schoolwork. Etzioni writes and publishes this article in the  Miami Herald  in order to reach a large audience to educate them, especially parents, on the fact that some teen jobs may be hindering teens rather than helping them. Etozoni's audience is a general audience, people who read the paper but most importantly parents who will benefit from reading the article. I disagree with this article. Although having a job can have and affect a teens efficiency at school, some kids have no choice other than to have a job because they’re having to support themselves. I do however agree with the statement that “y oungsters must learn to balan...

"How Serious Was the Volkswagen Scandal?"

Image
In the informative essay “How Serious Was the Volkswagen Scandal?” (2017), Jacob Skovran describes the negative effects that aut o-mobiles can have on our environment. Skovran uses different references of events to convey the importance on how damaging cars and the kind of gas used for them can be. The purpose of “How Serious Was the Volkswagen Scandal” was to inform readers in order to encourage the use of safe engines. The intended audience are car owners and car makers.       I completely agree with the way the engineers at Volkswagon handled the cheating scandal. As an engineer myself, I am held to a certain standard of honesty when it comes to my work. I can't imagine having to work on a car knowing that you are deceiving people and putting their lives and others in danger every single day. With that being said, if I were one of the engineers, I would've been one of the fifty that came forward and exposed the cheating scandal....

The Black Language

Image
In this argumentative essay, "If Black English isn't language, Then Tell Me, What Is?" written by James Baldwin (1979) argues that language is a means to control one's circumstances or to not be subjected to a reality that they cannot explain. Baldwin uses examples from other regions of the world to emphasis his point that language is a very broad topic. He explains how you can be apart of the same region of the world while having a "common" language and still not be able to understand another person's perspective or dialect. Baldwin states that language is a political instrument, in order to keep a sense of power over another. Baldwin's audience is anyone no matter their ethnicity, their dialect, or their political views. In the article, If Black English Isn't a language, Then Tell me What Is?", I personally agree with he author's main point of view. In the article he states that under slavery and oppression, blacks came to...

Rhetorical Reading Response: "War on HighSchool"

Image
In this informative article, "The War on High Schools" by Wendy Kaminer (1999),  Kaminer claims that schools in during that time had a zero tolerance policy in schools that could poosibly be hurting instead of helping students. The author of this story supports her thesis by sharing her personal experiences and using that to strengthen her point. The purpose of this article was to share with others how the "zero tolerance policy" in schools was developed in order to help but instead it ended up causing a lot of new cases with high school students which in turn hurt them. This article's audience was anyone who wanted to know about the school system in that time period. The assigned reading for this blog is called "The War on High Schools". It is essentially stating how as students our rights to free speech and individuality are monitored and or taken away. For example, in the reading there was a teenager who wore a pro-vegan t-shirt to school an...
